Volunteer in 2017

At the end of 2016, we announced our new four year EPIC CHALLENGE and the bold new direction for USGBC-Illinois.  Many of you filled out our volunteer interest survey at that time (thank you!).  Check out the opportunities available to volunteer on specific projects in 2017.

Please take a look at the opportunities below and click the application link to learn more. Each opportunity will require a different skill set and time commitment.

We also want to hear from you!  We are excited to be offering new volunteer opportunities that allow our members to share their expertise and bring carbon drawdown solutions to neighborhoods across Chicago.  To ensure that our volunteers have the skills to work with new partners and communities, the Community Engagement Committee wants your input on volunteer training topics that would be relevant to you as a USGBC-Illinois volunteer.  Click here to take the short survey.

1. Green Apple Day of Service:

Parents, teachers, students, companies and local organizations work together to transform schools into healthy, safe and productive learning environments through local service events.  Green Apple Day of Service project registration is currently open!  Choose a project that focuses on a low-to-no-cost carbon drawdown, sustainability solution and work with a school in your community to support a project.  Schools can name their project date — projects can take place from September 1, 2017 – April 15, 2018!

Get involved with a school as a volunteer or a mentor.  Volunteers help out on the day of the service project to lend and extra hand.  Mentors work with a school leading up to and throughout the project to make sure it is a success.

2. Greenbuild Host Committee Volunteer:

Greenbuild is coming to Chicago in 2018! The Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, which was launched in 2002, is the world’s largest conference and expo dedicated to green building.  On November 14-16, 2018 Greenbuild is coming back to Chicago for the third time and USGBC-Illinois is serving as the host chapter.

Get involved as a volunteer on the host committee!  Volunteering for the Host Committee is a unique opportunity for local building professionals to get behind-the-scenes of this global celebration of green building and make it an even more memorable event than the past ones. Committee work offers opportunities to grow personally and professionally; to network with the region’s sustainability leaders, and to better the local green economy.

3. Green Resident Engagement Collaborative:

The Green Resident Engagement Collaborative, in conjunction with Enterprise Community Partners, has developed a Green Resident Engagement Toolkit for use in affordable housing properties.  Utilize the resident engagement toolkit as you work with a small team of volunteers to nurture resident behavior change in your assigned building and create a culture that supports social, economic and environmental sustainability.  Bilingual – Spanish/English encouraged to apply.

4. Member Ambassador:

Are you a USGBC-Illinois member and want to share how you support the mission? If you answered yes, then this is the volunteer role for you!  Share your knowledge about USGBC-Illinois by volunteering as a greeter and host at upcoming events, including new member breakfasts, networking events and education programs.

Learn more and apply by contacting Joan Martin.

5. Building Sustainability Coach (BIT Aid):

Become a BIT Aid in Chicago – BIT is looking to pair individuals with an interest or expertise in sustainable operations and maintenance with non-profit facilities operators who have requested volunteer support to help them implement the 16 BIT Building sustainability best practices, including energy, water, and waste baselines and working towards improvements.

If you are interested in getting more involved with the Epic Challenge, but the current opportunities aren’t quite right for you, please complete this survey (if you haven’t already) to help us better understand your interest in advancing sustainability in Illinois and engaging in our Epic Challenge!
