Green Schools Symposium

CALL for PROPOSALS:USGBC-Illinois and the Association for Learning Environments invite you to submit education proposals for the 2016 Healthy & High Performing Schools Symposium on April 8 hosted by Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy located in the historic Chicago Pullman neighborhood!  The Symposium will include plenary sessions, breakout sessions, exhibits and opportunities to network with those who are committed to greening Illinois schools.All proposals are due by midnight on Friday, February 19.  Proposals may be submitted for 1-hour breakout sessions.  Sessions will be organized by the three Pillars of the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools program:

  • Pillar I: Reducing environmental impact and costs, including waste, water, energy use and alternative transportation;
  • Pillar II: Improving the health and wellness of students and staff, covering environmental health and nutrition and fitness; and
  • Pillar III: Providing effective sustainability education, and robust environmental education that engages STEM, civic skills and green career pathways.

Click here to learn more and to submit a proposal.  Complete all the fields of the online proposal form no later than midnight on Friday, February 19, 2016. All proposals will be reviewed by the symposium program subcommittee. Proposals will be selected and confirmed by Friday, March 4, 2016.

This symposium for Illinois K-12 schools is an opportunity to exchange ideas with symposium participants such as school and district administrators, regional superintendents, school board members, facilities managers and custodial staff, teachers, school health practitioners, facility planners and architects, school-related non-profits and agencies, and high school student environmental leaders.

Speakers and workshops will cover topics such as sustainable school facility planning and siting, green facilities management, sustainable renovation and construction, energy efficiency and conservation, environmental education and service learning, water conservation, waste reduction, and sustainable school transportation.

The opening plenary will feature Rachel Gutter, Senior Vice President of Knowledge at the U.S. Green Building Council and Director of the Center for Green Schools and  Dina Sorensen, VMDO Architects, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP BD+C.

CONTINUING EDUCATION:

  • Teachers earn up to 4.5 CPDUs
  • LEED Professionals earn up to 4.5 GBCI CE hours
