GPRO – Green Professional Building Skills Training
ARE YOU READY FOR GREEN BUILDING?
Urban Green Council, the New York Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, developed GPRO, Green Professional Building Skills Training, in collaboration with leading unions, contractors and educators. The final product is a comprehensive training program that caters to the building industry’s unique needs.
GPRO is a series of courses and certificate exams that teach the people who build, renovate and maintain buildings the principles of sustainability combined with trade-specific green construction knowledge. GPRO Certificate Holders will be poised to work in accordance with new regulations and to meet the expectations of owners and tenants who want healthier, environmentally sustainable, and energy-efficient homes and offices.
Why does the construction industry need to learn about sustainability?
As the local and national economy digs out from the worst recession since the 1930s, workers need to understand and implement green building practices in order to remain competitive. The LEED green building standard is now mandatory for new federal construction, and influential national developers like Vornado Realty Trust and Related are fully committed to sustainable building projects. Commercial and residential tenants at all levels are also demanding green features in the spaces they rent.
GPRO is designed by the trades for the trades. The courses assume that participants already know their trade, whether they are a plumber, electrician, or building operator. GPRO courses provide trade-specific information on sustainable construction practices that workers have not experienced on conventionally-built projects. The program materials and exam span the “green gap” between standard trade skills and the new awareness and skills required to successfully implement a green building project.
The GPRO Certificate demonstrates an understanding of green building as it applies to one’s trade—and provides a valuable credential in competing for green jobs. Developed as a national program, Urban Green Council expects that GPRO will be a necessary requirement for sustainable building projects across the country.
Steps to a GPRO Certificate:
- Each candidate will take the GPRO 4-hour prerequisite course, Fundamentals of Building Green, a primer on sustainable practices.
- Students then move on to a 6- to 8-hour trade-specific course. Available courses are listed below.
- Candidates take a multiple-choice GPRO exam which tests knowledge of both courses.
- Candidates with a passing score earn a GPRO Certificate, wallet card and hardhat sticker in both Fundamentals and their trade-specific course.
